i need help learning to drive a manual trans?

EpicRacer asked:

ok so im 18 and i am buying a car with a stick. there is no compromise- i want stick. my dad just bought a saturn ion with stick and im learning with that. i will eventually get a 240sx (if insurance doesnt kill me)\

so, i can shift fine- i learned a lot from videogames- so i know when to shift, clutch down, where the gears are at all that good stuff. what im having trouble with is if i stop the car heading up a hill, i cant get it going again [smoothly]. i either spin tires or stall the engine.

whats the proper technique for this?

please help! the sooner i get this the sooner i can drive it myself!!

With experience, you get better, but there are a couple things you can do now.
There’s the heel and toe method. It’s tricky, and the pedals need to be positioned right.
Then there’s the parking brake method. This only works if you have a hand brake. Pull up on the hand brake (while holding the release button) so you don’t roll back while you get the gas and clutch going.

this might sound silly but the way i learned to drive a manual was on a 3 wheeler as a kid of course 9-10 yrs old. but you get the hill practice up and down. learn the gas to clutch ratio. so find a friend that has a manual quad. you wont hurt anything. 16 yrs ASE cert. retired

practice-practice—when i taught my daughter to drive a stick i took her on an early sunday morning to the mall where there were no cars. after getting the hang of it on flat ground we went to a hill in same lot and practiced—-give it more gas and let out on clutch a little slower and thats it. –a lot of it is feel as u let clutch out

    Practice makes perfect!

start buy learning on smaller hills till you get use to that and when you are used to your car and what it can do try a more difficult hill.
Work on your feathering the gas and don’t be afraid to use the hand brake part way if the hill is that steep and over power
    a little.
I would avoid those roads for a while if you can.

The whole thing is letting the clutch up EASY. You need to take somebody’s old stick shift car and go to an EMPTY parking lot and spend a couple hours practicing. It’s like riding a bicycle or swimming, once you learn it, you’ve got it forever.

If you don’t have a friend with a beater you can borrow, try Rent-A-Heap.

Hills can be a challenge. Try this, foot on brake clutch depressed gear selector in 1st gear. While the brake is still depressed SLOWLY let the clutch out until the engine speed drops ever so slightly.Take your foot of the brake and place on gas pedal depressing slighty release clutch fully and drive off. This will require some practice on your part. Find a steep hill with no traffic and practice untill you can do it smoothly.
A second style is to set the parking brake on the hill and slowly release it while driving off.
Learning a stick shift has it’s advantages, people are less likely to ask to borrow your car!!
