how hard is it to learn to drive a 5-speed standard transmission?

john_2k69 asked:

Okay I’ve been driving for almost a year now, and to be honest.. I suppose I’m getting “bored” of driving an automatic, since I just needed to be comfortable behind the wheel when I first got my license and now that is all accomplished, I want to fully learn how to drive a standard transmission. I’ve kinda tried it a couple of times in my friend’s car, and the ones that really get me is when I need to park and yielding + left turns in traffic. any tips from you pros?

First, no not the gear, the issue. It’s in the mind set, of what you’re doing when you’re engaging the clutch. Ease it up, and give it more gas. You actually get a real feel for it. Sticks are alot more responsive than automatics. After a couple days, you don’t even think about it.

Dennis is right, with a little practice and an emergency brake (hills) and maybe a clutch or two you will be well on your way.Good luck!

im not a pro im just learing too just put it in second yield and give it gas and normal drive
its not hard im just learning and ive been driving a 5 speed for a week now just get the feel of the car and the clutch give it a lil gas and let off the cluth easy but dont try the hill part unless u master the take off cuz i still havent got the hill part yet but enought not to hit a car wut ever u dont dont ride the clutch that means holding it with your foot while the car is moving if u do that it will burn up adn u will ahve to replace it
get a old car like i got a 89 ford ranger u might cut off a few time dont worry i was in heavy traffic the other day and i cut off i felt embrassed but they are fun to drive and can be a pain in stop and go traffic and hills
